Riccardo Patrese

Riccardo Patrese was born in Padua, Italy, in 1954 and built his early reputation through karting and European Formula 3 before entering Formula 1 with Shadow in 1977. In his early years he was seen as fast and aggressive, and controversy followed him after the 1978 Italian Grand Prix accident. Over a long career, however, he reshaped his reputation into that of an experienced, resilient and highly capable professional. Patrese raced for teams including Arrows, Brabham and Alfa Romeo before becoming an important part of Williams in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He won races, helped develop competitive cars and partnered Nigel Mansell during Williams’ return to the top. In 1992, driving the dominant FW14B, he contributed to the Constructors’ Championship and finished second in the Drivers’ standings. After a final Formula 1 season with Benetton in 1993, Patrese left the championship with 256 Grand Prix starts, then a record for the sport. He later remained visible through historic racing and motorsport appearances. His legacy is built on longevity, adaptability and survival across very different F1 eras, from the dangerous late 1970s to the high-technology cars of the early 1990s.
