Heinz-Harald Frentzen

Heinz-Harald Frentzen was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, in 1967 and came through karting in the same generation as Michael Schumacher and Karl Wendlinger. He built his reputation in junior categories and Formula 3000 before making his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 1994. Quiet and reserved outside the car, Frentzen was widely regarded as a naturally gifted driver with considerable speed. Frentzen moved to Williams in 1997, replacing Damon Hill and joining a team capable of winning the championship. He scored his first Grand Prix victory that season, while team-mate Jacques Villeneuve took the title, but the partnership never fully unlocked his potential. His best season came with Jordan in 1999, when he won twice and unexpectedly stayed in championship contention deep into the year. After Jordan, Frentzen raced for Prost, Arrows and Sauber before leaving Formula 1 after 2003. He later competed in DTM and sports car racing, remaining part of German motorsport.
