Carlos Reutemann

Carlos Reutemann was born in Santa Fe Province, Argentina, in 1942 and built his early racing career at home before moving to Europe. He made a spectacular Formula 1 debut with Brabham in 1972, taking pole position at his first Grand Prix in Argentina. Elegant, controlled and sometimes emotionally complex, Reutemann quickly became one of the most intriguing talents of the 1970s. Reutemann raced for Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus and Williams, winning 12 Grands Prix. His closest brush with the World Championship came in 1981, when he fought Nelson Piquet to the final race and lost the title by a single point. He also enjoyed strong seasons with Ferrari, especially in 1978, and later helped Williams during one of its most competitive periods. His career combined great speed with a reputation for reserve and unpredictability. After leaving Formula 1, Reutemann entered politics in Argentina, serving as governor of Santa Fe Province and later as a senator. He died in 2021. In Argentine motorsport history, he stands behind only Juan Manuel Fangio in Formula 1 significance. Though he never became World Champion, his victories, near-title season and distinctive personality make him one of South America’s most important Grand Prix drivers.
