Heikki Kovalainen
Heikki Kovalainen was born in Suomussalmi, Finland, in 1981 and built his career through karting, junior single-seaters and the Renault development system. He won the World Series by Nissan title and impressed in GP2 before making his Formula 1 debut with Renault in 2007. Calm and technically capable, he arrived as part of Finland’s strong modern line of Grand Prix drivers. Kovalainen moved to McLaren in 2008 as Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate and took his only F1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix that year. The role was demanding, especially alongside a rising champion, but he contributed to McLaren during a highly competitive period. Later he raced for Lotus/Caterham, helping a new team establish itself even though points were difficult to achieve. After Formula 1, Kovalainen found success in Japan, particularly in Super GT, where he became champion. He also competed in rallying, showing the broad driving ability often associated with Finnish racers. His F1 record is modest compared with his early promise, but his career remained varied, professional and respected across several disciplines.
