Lorenzo Bandini

Lorenzo Bandini was born in Barce, in what is now Libya, in 1935 and moved to Italy as a child. He became involved with cars and racing at a young age, building experience through sports cars and junior categories before reaching Formula 1. Quiet, determined and technically capable, Bandini became an important Ferrari driver during the 1960s, contributing in both Grand Prix racing and endurance competition. Bandini’s only Formula 1 World Championship victory came at the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix, and he also played a supporting role in John Surtees’ championship season with Ferrari. He was trusted as a loyal team driver and was highly effective outside F1 as well, racing in events such as the Targa Florio and Le Mans. His reputation rested on steadiness, courage and service to Ferrari rather than flamboyance. Bandini died after injuries sustained in a crash at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. His death became part of the wider safety discussion around Monaco and Formula 1’s emergency response standards. Although his F1 win record was brief, his legacy remains significant: he was a dedicated Ferrari racer whose career reflects both the romance and danger of 1960s motorsport.
