Jos Verstappen

Jos Verstappen was born in Montfort, the Netherlands, in 1972 and rose through karting before making his name in Formula Opel and German Formula 3. He entered Formula 1 with Benetton in 1994 as team-mate to Michael Schumacher, a difficult but high-profile debut season for a young driver. His early speed was clear, but the environment was demanding and consistency was hard to establish. Verstappen went on to race for several teams, including Simtek, Footwork, Tyrrell, Stewart, Arrows and Minardi. His two podium finishes came during his Benetton season, but he also produced flashes of pace in midfield machinery, especially in difficult or chaotic races. His career combined aggression, natural speed and instability, making him a recognisable figure of the 1990s and early 2000s grid. After his own Formula 1 career, Verstappen became deeply involved in the development of his son Max Verstappen, helping shape one of the most successful drivers of the modern era. Jos’s personal F1 record was limited, but he helped establish a Dutch presence in the sport and later became part of a much larger Dutch Formula 1 story through Max’s rise.
