Gerhard Berger

Gerhard Berger was born in Wörgl, Austria, in 1959 and reached Formula 1 after gaining experience in touring cars and junior categories. He made his Grand Prix debut with ATS in 1984 and soon became known for speed, physical toughness and an outgoing personality. After taking his first victory with Benetton, he became a front-running driver for Ferrari and McLaren during one of Formula 1’s strongest eras. At Ferrari, Berger helped carry the team through a difficult rebuilding period and won the 1988 Italian Grand Prix, the race that famously prevented McLaren from completing a perfect season. At McLaren, he partnered Ayrton Senna and brought both pace and humour to the team. Later returns to Ferrari and Benetton added further victories, giving him a career total of 10 Grand Prix wins. After retiring from Formula 1, Berger remained influential through roles with BMW, Toro Rosso and DTM. He never won the World Championship, but his career was much more than a supporting act. His victories for major teams, friendship with Senna and long presence at the front of the grid make him one of the most memorable drivers of the 1980s and 1990s.
