Tyrrell

Tyrrell was the Formula 1 team led by Ken Tyrrell, one of the sport’s most respected independent team owners. The team grew from junior racing and its successful partnership with Matra, but its identity was built around practical judgement, strong driver relationships and an especially close bond with Jackie Stewart. Tyrrell was not a manufacturer giant; it was a sharp, disciplined racing team. In 1971, Tyrrell won the Constructors’ Championship with its own chassis, while Stewart took the Drivers’ title. Stewart added another crown in 1973, confirming Tyrrell as one of the leading teams of the early 1970s. The team was also famous for technical boldness, most notably the six-wheeled P34, which remains one of the most recognisable experimental cars in F1 history. Tyrrell later struggled as Formula 1 became more expensive, but its lineage continued through BAR, Honda, Brawn GP and eventually Mercedes. The name disappeared, but the team’s DNA remained part of the modern grid. Tyrrell’s legacy is that of a true independent champion: clever, inventive and built on trust between a team owner, engineers and drivers.
