Pedro de la Rosa

Overview

Pedro de la Rosa was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1971 and built an unusual international career before reaching Formula 1. After karting and racing in Spain, he moved to Japan, where he became highly successful in Formula Nippon and the All-Japan GT Championship. His 1997 titles in Japan established him as a serious professional driver and gave him a reputation for adaptability, technical feedback and race intelligence. De la Rosa made his Formula 1 debut with Arrows in 1999 and scored a point in his first Grand Prix in Australia. He later raced for Jaguar, Sauber and HRT, but he became especially respected for his long test and development work with McLaren. In 2006, after Juan Pablo Montoya left the team, de la Rosa returned to racing and finished second at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the best result of his F1 career. After his racing career, de la Rosa remained closely involved in Formula 1 through development roles, Ferrari work, broadcasting and ambassadorial duties. He has also been associated with Aston Martin in a public-facing role. His legacy is not built on victories, but on professionalism, technical understanding and a rare career that connected Japanese racing, F1 testing culture and Spain’s modern Grand Prix presence.
