Thierry Boutsen

Thierry Boutsen was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1957 and developed through junior racing and sports cars before entering Formula 1 with Arrows in 1983. He became known as a calm, intelligent and technically aware driver rather than a flamboyant one. After racing for Arrows and Benetton, he joined Williams in 1989, where his consistency and race management earned him his greatest results. Boutsen won three Formula 1 Grands Prix, all with Williams. His first victory came in the wet and chaotic 1989 Canadian Grand Prix, and he later added wins in Australia and Hungary. The 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix was especially memorable, as he held off Ayrton Senna under pressure to take a controlled and hard-earned victory. His best performances showed patience, discipline and defensive skill. After Williams, Boutsen raced for Ligier and Jordan before leaving Formula 1, later continuing in sports cars and endurance racing. In Belgian motorsport history, he stands as one of the country’s most significant F1 drivers after Jacky Ickx. His legacy is built on professionalism, strong judgement and the ability to make the most of difficult races.
