Jochen Mass

Jochen Mass was born in Dorfen, Germany, in 1946 and built his career through touring cars and sports cars before moving into Formula 1. He raced for teams including Surtees, McLaren, ATS and Arrows, becoming known as a dependable and experienced German driver. Mass was not a flamboyant superstar, but he earned respect through professionalism and versatility across different forms of racing. Mass’s only Formula 1 victory came at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, a race stopped early after serious safety concerns and accidents at Montjuïc. At McLaren he was a useful team driver during a competitive period that included James Hunt. His F1 career also carried tragedy, as he was involved in the circumstances around Gilles Villeneuve’s fatal accident at Zolder in 1982, a moment that marked the era deeply. After Formula 1, Mass achieved major success in sports car racing, including victory at the 1989 Le Mans 24 Hours with Sauber-Mercedes. He later remained active in historic racing and Mercedes-related events. His Grand Prix win record was modest, but his broader career makes him one of Germany’s notable all-round racing professionals, linking F1, touring cars and endurance success.
