Virgin

Marussia Virgin Racing

Overview

Virgin entered Formula 1 in 2010 as one of the new teams and raced in 2010 and 2011. Built around Nick Wirth’s CFD-led design philosophy, it struggled with practical problems, including fuel tank capacity and insufficient aerodynamic development. Timo Glock, Lucas di Grassi and Jérôme d’Ambrosio drove for the team, but points were out of reach. Richard Branson’s branding brought attention, yet competitiveness remained limited. Virgin later became Marussia. Its short F1 life demonstrated the gap between innovative concepts and the harsh reality of Grand Prix competition.
