Takuma Sato
Takuma Sato was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1977 and came to motorsport unusually late after first pursuing cycling. Once he switched to racing, his progress was rapid: he moved to Britain, won the British Formula 3 Championship, and earned a Formula 1 seat with Jordan in 2002. His attacking style and determination quickly made him a favourite among Japanese fans. Sato’s strongest F1 spell came with BAR Honda, where he scored a podium at the 2004 United States Grand Prix and helped the team during one of its most competitive seasons. He later raced for Super Aguri, where his pass on Fernando Alonso in Canada became a memorable moment for the small Japanese-linked team. His F1 career was often defined by bravery, risk and passionate support. After Formula 1, Sato achieved major success in IndyCar, winning the Indianapolis 500 twice and becoming the first Japanese driver to win the race. That achievement transformed his legacy beyond F1. He is remembered not only as a spirited Grand Prix driver, but as one of Japan’s most important international racing figures.
