Kamui Kobayashi
Kamui Kobayashi was born in Amagasaki, Japan, in 1986 and came through karting before joining Toyota’s driver programme. He raced in Europe through Formula Renault, Formula 3 and GP2, building a reputation for bold overtaking and fearless race craft. His Formula 1 chance came with Toyota at the end of 2009, where his aggressive debut performances immediately drew attention. Kobayashi moved to Sauber after Toyota left F1 and became one of the most exciting midfield drivers of the early 2010s. He was known for late-braking passes, especially into heavy braking zones, and for giving Japanese fans a driver who raced with visible confidence. His podium at the 2012 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka was a landmark moment, celebrated as one of Japan’s great modern F1 achievements. After Formula 1, Kobayashi became a major figure in endurance racing with Toyota, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours and the World Endurance Championship. He later combined driving with leadership roles in Toyota’s programme. His legacy reaches beyond F1: he is one of Japan’s most versatile international racing drivers, admired for aggression, speed and loyalty to Toyota.
