Alex Yoong

Overview

Alex Yoong is a Malaysian driver who raced for Minardi from late 2001 through 2002. He became Malaysia’s first Formula 1 driver and helped raise interest in the sport across Southeast Asia. In an uncompetitive car and with limited experience, he struggled at times, including failures to qualify, but his presence carried national significance. Like many drivers in small teams of that era, his opportunity was shaped by both backing and representation. After F1 he raced in categories such as A1GP. Yoong’s importance lies more in regional history than in Grand Prix results.
