Manfred Winkelhock

Manfred Winkelhock was born in Waiblingen, West Germany, in 1951 and built his career through touring cars and junior racing before reaching the international stage. Linked early with BMW programmes, he became known as a fast and determined German driver. He made his Formula 1 debut in 1980 and later raced for teams including ATS, Brabham and RAM, often in difficult machinery. Winkelhock did not achieve major results in Formula 1, but his career reflected the realities of racing for small teams in a demanding and dangerous era. He competed during the early 1980s, when reliability, safety and limited resources made midfield and backmarker drives especially difficult. Within those conditions, he showed courage, commitment and enough pace to remain part of the Grand Prix field. He died in 1985 after a sports car racing accident. The Winkelhock family remained important in German motorsport, with his brother Joachim and son Markus also racing internationally. Manfred Winkelhock’s legacy is not measured by wins, but by his role as a brave professional racer who carried German talent through one of Formula 1’s toughest periods.
